I am participating in Sockapalooza 4, for the first time. Unfortunately, however, my sock pal does not have a website, so I can't scope her out. I do know, however, that she lives in New Mexico. Hmmm. I live in Wisconsin where wool socks can be worn nearly every month of the year, depending on the weather on a particular date. I would imagine that New Mexico's weather requires wool socks in only a few months of the year. Therefore, I thought of using cotton/wool/nylon yarn and making shortie socks; i.e. socks that come just above the ankle. Or, could shortie socks be cheating--less knitting. Not so fancy. I'd use a lacy stitch, perhaps. Or, make two pair to make up for the fewer rows needed for the socks.
Any comments? What would you recommend??
Thanks to those who commented on where they wear their shawls. Jeans and t-shirts seem to be perfect shawl partners. I've been wearing my lace shawls only for dress wear, but I think I will loosen up a bit and wear them on most any occasion!!

I would recommend a nice, soft wool, and a lacy pattern. I bet people in New Mexico enjoy wearing wool socks too, especially with the air-conditioning running all the time. Also, maybe she lives in a higher elevation where it's cooler. Or maybe she winters in Canada.
I think a cotton or bamboo or silk blend (maybe with a little wool, maybe not...) is probably an excellent idea. I'm not quite as keen on the short cuffs idea, unless that's what she prefers. Could you set up an anonymous email address and ask her what type of sock she would get the most use out of? I've emailed my pal questions along these lines, and my knitter-pal has sent me similar emails. It's not ruining the suprise, it's just making sure the socks will be wearable.
I live in New Mexico, but I'm pretty sure, from the hints my pal has left for me, that you are not my pal. I live in the Rio Grande valley, we have hot summers. In summer, I get the thinnest socks I can find at WalMart, but in the winter I love my wool handknits. Never tried cotton or bamboo, but that does sound interesting. Hope this helps.

I used to live in Southern California, where socks are pretty optional as well. Something very soft and lacey would be great to wear around the house, even on hot days. I'd email and ask if she has a favorite kind of yarn (use an anonymous username on gmail or hotmail).
I really like bamboo for warmer weather. You might also try some Tofutsies which is new soy and chitin yarn and comes in great colors!!
